Updates to Gallup Waypoints Guide book: (posted on 1-11-09)

There are just a few updates to announce to everyone:

Trails:

There are some new trail markings in the forest. The forest service finally approved some (not all) of the trails in the Quaking Aspen area and the local trail advocate group Gallup Trails 2010 got some signage up. Pictured is an overview of the trails in the area for you to mark in your book--the red is new (not seen in your book), the black is existing. This overview combines trails found on pages: 21, 45, 57...Quaking Aspen, Plush, and Quasimoto respectively. "Lost lake Rim Trail" is the latest section of trail built by GT 2010 and approved by the forest service--expect some new trail features to it, like faint, and bumpy until it becomes worn in. The Berma Rd. has always been there--I just never included it in my book because it was so hard to find the beginnings and ends (and I lived and rode there for years) Happy trails!!!

The "Flight of the Blue Jay" trail in my book is fading into dis-use. The local mountain biker that lived in the area moved and it has not seen much use over the past years.

The "Hogback" Trail is in the same situation--not much use and very steep.

I hear rumors of some new stuff going in near "Pete's Wicked Tr" --Back in the day, that area was denied access and the result was the ever-popular High Desert Tr Syst. (Dawn Til Dusk and 1st Mesa) ...you'll just have to poke around for yourself until I beat info out of locals for you :).

Business:

High Mesa Bikes and Gear has closed it's doors as of last fall. :( There is no bike shop in Gallup currently.

Oasis restaurant closed right after my book came out :(

Gabi's Coolatte is now called Angela's cup of Joe--still serves good coffee. :)

Typos:

I misspelled "mapping" on the copyright page.

Under the "Hogback" ride description. It should read: Begin riding East on Hassler Valley Rd....(not west)

That's all folks ! thanks for the support and hit me with any questions/ comments you may have.

Make a great day,

Steinar

This page is intended for questions...and random postings and comments from riders like you.

In Silver City NM there is an off road race called Signal Peak Challenge. This year's theme is James Bond 007. When Barin Beard asked me to help make some props out of bike parts to pump up the festivities, I couldn't resist. Here are the two machines I came up with:

click on a game to watch it in action. Quicktime--no sound.

I may be able eschew obfuscate an answer for you here.

Question: What is your one favorite trail/ ride (combo of trails) in the Gallup area? Send answer here.

Stan Says: "I like the dense forested Milk Ranch Loop ride with an out and back option for more mileage on the Quasimoto tr."

Barin (the Mimbres Man) Beard Says from Venezuela: "I look at it [Gallup Waypoints] and I get excited and let out a big sigh. I love riding in Gallup. The rides were always great and fun. I didn't get to know the place like I knew the Gila. I told them, every time I rode there (especially the Red Rocks ride) I always had the Magnificent Seven theme song in my head. I always felt I was in a Western. I love riding there."

Q: What the heck is a "Waypoint" anyway?

A: A waypoint is a term used to describe GPS (Global Positioning System) unit’s mark on a specific point. The marks I’ve place in the book are of the trailhead of each trail and the front door of each sponsor. I’ve chosen the HDDD: MM.MMM’ format only because I think it looks cool. The trails in the guide book were GPS tracked then I later went back over the tracks with an Adobe graphics program to make the lines either dotted to represent single-track or dashed to represent two-track. I color coded them Green, Blue, Black to represent level of difficulty.
