Trail Updates:
Ride start to Repeatedly Wicked Tr. Pg 52 has changed: the old ride start had you go directly out of the parking lot at a 45 degree angle—it is now fenced off. New: ride out of the parking lot south to Hassler Valley Rd. turn left onto it until you come to a cattle guard. Look left for a trail that traverses up the hill side just to the east of the cattle guard. This is the new ride start, ride mileage from here may be affected by a tenth or two more.
Driving descriptions of Mileage markers to all the trail heads affected in the forest off hwy 400 need several updates. The transportation dept decided it would be funny to reverse the markers on a ten mile stretch of hwy after my book came out—Hwy 400.
The following trails are directly affected: “Old” is how it read in my book, “New” is how it should read. Please make changes in your book in a manner that makes sense to you.
Quaking Aspen Classic Tr. Pg 20 Old: Mile markers count backward.. New: Mile markers count sequential from Interstate 40…) At 0.6 miles after the 7th mile marker turn right onto gravel road. New parking area and trail head now named Hilso! No longer Quaking Aspen.
Wonderful Beautiful Tr. Pg 30 Old: Pass the Bear Springs store… New: Pass the Bear Springs store, and at 0.2 tenths after the third mile marker there is a paved road called Paint Horse Rd. Turn Right. Park at Red log building.
Milk Ranch loop. Pg.32 Old: Climb a steep hill… New: Climb a steep hill at the top is the 5th mile marker, Park directly across from it on your right in the little dirt pull out.
Purple Haze Tr. Pg 34 Old: Climb a steep hill… New: Climb a steep hill at the top is the 5th mile marker, At 0.2 tenths past it on the left is a dirt road. Park there.
Quaking Aspen Tr. Pg 36 Old: Mile markers count backward.. New: Mile markers count sequential from I-40, At 0.6 miles after the 7th mile marker turn right onto gravel road. New parking area and trail head now named Hilso! No longer Quaking Aspen.
Plush Tr. Pg. 44 Old: Just after mile post one…New: Just after mile post 9 turn right onto Gravel Road 191…
Quasimoto Tr. Pg 56 Old: Climb a steep hill… New: Climb a steep hill at the top is the 5th mile marker, Park directly across from it on your right in the little dirt pull out.
Indirectly affected:
Red Rocks Tr. and Surfing the Rincon. Pg 24/ 46 respectively are both past all the affected mileage markers on hwy 400 that are now reversed.
Tampico Springs Tr. Pg. 42 Old: Mile markers count backwards… New: Mile markers count sequentially from I-40, at the end of pavement and onto the gravel road a few yards take the pull out into the parking lot on the right.
Thanks for your understanding and helping me mark these corrections in your book,
Steinar Smith
Updates to Gallup Waypoints Guide book: (posted on 1-11-09)
There are just a few updates to announce to everyone:
Trails:
There are some new trail markings in the forest. The forest service finally approved some (not all) of the trails in the Quaking Aspen area and the local trail advocate group Gallup Trails 2010 got some signage up. Pictured is an overview of the trails in the area for you to mark in your book--the red is new (not seen in your book), the black is existing. This overview combines trails found on pages: 21, 45, 57...Quaking Aspen, Plush, and Quasimoto respectively. "Lost lake Rim Trail" is the latest section of trail built by GT 2010 and approved by the forest service--expect some new trail features to it, like faint, and bumpy until it becomes worn in. The Berma Rd. has always been there--I just never included it in my book because it was so hard to find the beginnings and ends (and I lived and rode there for years) Happy trails!!!

The "Flight of the Blue Jay" trail in my book is fading into dis-use. The local mountain biker that lived in the area moved and it has not seen much use over the past years.
The "Hogback" Trail is in the same situation--not much use and very steep.
I hear rumors of some new stuff going in near "Pete's Wicked Tr" --Back in the day, that area was denied access and the result was the ever-popular High Desert Tr Syst. (Dawn Til Dusk and 1st Mesa) ...you'll just have to poke around for yourself until I beat info out of locals for you :).
Business:
High Mesa Bikes and Gear has closed it's doors as of last fall. :( There is no bike shop in Gallup currently.
Oasis restaurant closed right after my book came out :(
Gabi's Coolatte is now called Angela's cup of Joe--still serves good coffee. :)
Typos:
I misspelled "mapping" on the copyright page.
Under the "Hogback" ride description. It should read: Begin riding East on Hassler Valley Rd....(not west)
That's all folks ! thanks for the support and hit me with any questions/ comments you may have.
Make a great day,
Steinar
In Silver City NM there is an off road race called Signal Peak Challenge. This year's theme is James Bond 007. When Barin Beard asked me to help make some props out of bike parts to pump up the festivities, I couldn't resist. Here are the two machines I came up with:
click on a game to watch it in action. Quicktime--no sound.
